Toronto, ON (August 24, 2010) – Phil King, President of Sports and Executive Vice-President of Programming, CTV Inc., today announced three appointments at TSN, effective immediately. Reporting to King, Stewart Johnston is promoted to President. Reporting to Johnston are Mark Milliere, who is promoted to Senior Vice-President, Production, and Shawn Redmond, who moves to a new role as Vice-President, Programming.

As President of TSN, Johnston, 39, will oversee all of the day-to-day operations of TSN and its various platforms including TSN2, TSN.ca, TSN Mobile, and TSN Events, along with ESPN Classic and NHL Network.

“Over his past 13 years at TSN, Stewart has proven to have a real instinct for sports broadcasting and has been instrumental in the evolution of TSN from a single broadcaster to a fully integrated multimedia sports company,” said King. “In addition to implementing an aggressive programming strategy and driving record audiences, Stewart’s negotiations with our partners have put TSN in an excellent position to continue to grow the business for years to come.”

“From the World Juniors to the Grey Cup, Phil King has helped make TSN an institution in this country,” said Johnston. “It is an incredible honour to take the reins from him and lead such an accomplished team of broadcasters. All of us at TSN are fully committed to giving Canadians even more of the best sports coverage possible.”

Formerly, Johnston was Vice-President of Programming for TSN, a position he has held since 2007. In that role, he was responsible for all aspects of the network’s program strategy along with the negotiation for, and acquisition of, key sports broadcasting properties. Johnston worked closely with King to shape the network’s identity and create one of the most impressive broadcast schedules in the country – resulting in record audiences for TSN across all of its platforms.

In addition to overseeing TSN’s program strategy, Johnston has been one of the key negotiators in cementing TSN’s partnerships with major sports properties including the NHL, CFL, Hockey Canada, NFL, NBA, NASCAR and the Canadian Curling Association. Johnston has been with TSN since 1997 when he joined the network as a program scheduler.

As Senior Vice-President, Production, Mark Milliere becomes Johnston’s second-in-command. Milliere continues to be responsible for all aspects of TSN’s live productions and in-house shows, including SportsCentre, NHL ON TSN, CFL ON TSN, IIHF WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP, curling, OFF THE RECORD WITH MICHAEL LANDSBERG, and NBA. He is also responsible for hiring production staff and talent.

“Mark is one of the most accomplished and respected television producers and sports executives in Canada,” said Johnston. “He has led a team that has consistently raised the bar in sports broadcasting in this country and internationally. As my right hand, Mark will take on a broader scope in the day-to-day business of the network.”

A two-time Gemini Award winner, Milliere has overseen production of some of Canada’s most-watched sports broadcasts, including Olympic Games hockey, the IIHF World Junior Championship, and the Grey Cup. Milliere has spent his entire 23-year career at TSN. Before becoming Vice-President of Production in 2007, Milliere was Vice-President of News and NHL on TSN. Milliere joined TSN in 1987 as an Editorial Assistant at SportsCentre (then called Sportsdesk) while still a student at Ryerson University in the Radio & Television Arts program.

As Vice-President, Programming, Shawn Redmond assumes Johnston’s former role with TSN.

“Shawn’s new role comes in recognition of his outstanding work in positioning TSN as one of Canadian television’s strongest brands,” said Johnston. “As Vice-President of Programming, he will assume an enhanced role on TSN’s senior management team, overseeing TSN’s content across all platforms and taking on a larger role in the strategy of the business.”

Previously Vice-President, Marketing, Redmond, 36, has led the overall consumer marketing strategy for TSN, as well as digital sports networks NHL Network and ESPN Classic, since 2007. He is responsible for numerous award-winning TSN promotions, including the highly successful Kraft Celebration Tour and the launch of TSN2, and has collaborated with many high-profile sports properties, including the NHL, CFL, Hockey Canada, NFL and NBA.

Redmond joined TSN in 2005 as Senior Marketing Manager. Prior to joining TSN, Redmond spent four years as Manager, Sponsorship Marketing at RBC Financial Group, where he worked on sports-related brand initiatives. Redmond has also worked at PCS Innovations and Molson Canada.

A replacement for Redmond will be announced soon.

TSN is Canada’s Sports Leader and Canada’s most-watched specialty network. Delivering more sports coverage in High Definition than any other network in Canada, TSN’s comprehensive broadcast schedule features an exciting lineup of sports including NHL, IIHF, CFL, NFL, NBA, MLB, Season of Champions Curling, Golf’s Majors, F1, NASCAR Sprint Cup, Grand Slam Tennis and Championship Boxing events. TSN properties include TSN2, TSN MOBILE and the industry leading sports website TSN.ca.
Toronto, ON (February 8, 2009) – SUPER BOWL XLIV is the most-watched SUPER BOWL ever with a record audience of 6.7 million viewers in Canada on CTV (6.025 million) and RDS (650,000) last night. Preliminary overnight data from BBM Canada confirms that the New Orleans Saints’ 31-17 victory over the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday is the second biggest audience for any broadcast on Canadian television since 1994.* Overall, an astonishing 16.64 million viewers – or one in two Canadians – tuned in to some or all of the broadcast on CTV or RDS.

Audience levels for SUPER BOWL XLIV on CTV and RDS peaked at 8 million viewers in the final minutes of the fourth quarter as the New Orleans Saints’ Tracy Porter returned a Peyton Manning interception for a touchdown, sealing the Saints victory. The game attracted nearly two million viewers alone in Toronto/Hamilton, Canada’s largest television market, and delivered an incredible 65 share among Men 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54.

The national audience for SUPER BOWL XLIV is more than 52% higher than last year’s NFL championship game that had an average audience of 4.3 million viewers.

The record audience comes as CTV and the NFL confirmed earlier today that they have extended their broadcast partnership for the next four years with the SUPER BOWL airing exclusively in Canada on CTV through to SUPER BOWL XLVIII.

“Last night’s overwhelming audience is a testament to what a cultural phenomenon the Super Bowl is every year,” said Rick Brace, President, Revenue, Business Planning and Sports, CTV Inc. “What a way to end a tremendous season of NFL football on CTV. We can’t wait to bring fans and advertisers all of the SUPER BOWL excitement again next year. ”

CTV’s extended SUPER BOWL XLIV coverage also had impressive audiences with SUPER BOWL XLIV Kick-off Show attracting 3.7 million viewers. CTV’s newest reality series, UNDERCOVER BOSS, premiered in the coveted post-SUPER BOWL timeslot to an average audience of 1.83 million viewers. Episode 2 airs next Sunday, February 14 at 9 p.m. ET on /A\.

SUPER BOWL XLIV caps off an incredibly successful season of NFL football on CTV –with the network setting new audience records throughout the regular season, playoffs and the SUPER BOWL.

Final SUPER BOWL XLIV audience numbers will be available in the coming weeks.

*CTV began archiving ratings data in 1994.

Audience levels peaked at 7.5 million viewers in the final minutes of the third period as tournament MVP Jordan Eberle scored for Team Canada and sent the dramatic game into overtime.

“TSN has covered some of the biggest sporting events in the world over the past 25 years, but this one will go down as one of the most exciting and emotional games we have ever broadcast,” says Phil King, President of TSN. “It is a tribute to Hockey Canada that this tournament has grown to where it is today – capturing the attention of the nation every year. We are absolutely thrilled so many Canadians joined us for the game and can’t wait to do it again next year in Buffalo.”

“It is wonderful that so many Canadians watched and cheered on Team Canada last night,” says Bob Nicholson, President of Hockey Canada. “We are also extremely proud of our longstanding partnership with TSN – a partnership that has worked so well for both organizations and has grown the game of hockey across the country.”

for a digital channel -

Toronto, ON (January 5, 2010) – Not only was Sunday another huge day for the IIHF World Junior Championship on TSN, it was a landmark day for TSN2 and digital television in Canada. While TSN’s broadcast of the Canada-Switzerland semifinal attracted an average audience of 3.2 million viewers and was the most-watched program overall on Canadian television according to BBM Canada, TSN2 continued to set new benchmarks for audiences on a digital channel.

TSN2’s broadcast of the World Juniors United States-Sweden semifinal on Sunday recorded an average audience of 902,000 viewers making it the highest audience ever registered for a digital channel. The audience peaked at 1.3 million viewers during the third period. The World Juniors broadcast more than doubled the previous audience high for a digital channel set by TSN2 in September when the NHL pre-season Toronto-Boston game attracted an average audience of 413,000 viewers.

Even without Team Canada playing in the second semifinal, TSN2’s audience ranked higher than new episodes of popular prime-time programs on conventional networks.

“This is a coming of age for TSN2 and digital television in Canada. The remarkable audience is not only a testament to the popularity of this tournament, but to the incredible growth of TSN2 over the past year,” says Phil King, President of TSN. “TSN2 has always been about giving sports fans more choice when it comes to watching live events and we are thrilled to deliver more coverage of the World Juniors than ever before with TSN2.”

TSN2 is the fourth-ranked digital channel in Canada with an average audience that is higher than all other digital sports channels combined. TSN2 is available in 4.5 million homes across all major television service providers in both standard and high definition.

TSN2
TSN2, a division of CTVglobemedia, brings Canadian sport fans a jam-packed lineup of major league sports action, with exclusive live events, encore telecasts of key sporting events and better timeslots for viewing in Western Canada. TSN2’s roster features an exciting lineup of sports and events, including the NHL, Blue Jays baseball, NBA, Curling, International Hockey, Golf, NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, NASCAR Nationwide Series, IndyCar Series, Grand Slam Tennis, UEFA Champions League Soccer, Boxing, Mixed Martial Arts, and NCAA Football and Basketball. Also available in High Definition, sports fans can access TSN2 through television service providers across the country.

– TSN and TSN2 team up to deliver 19 games, including all Team Canada match-ups, quarter-finals, semifinals and Bronze and Gold medal games, beginning December 26 –

Toronto, ON (December 22, 2009) – Say what? With only four days to go until the start of the 2010 IIHF WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP, hockey fans across the country are buzzing about Team Canada’s chances of winning a sixth straight gold medal at the tournament. Who’s going to win? Who will be Canada’s toughest opponent? Who on Team Canada will rise up and emerge as a breakout star?

TSN’s World Juniors broadcast team of Gord Miller and Pierre McGuire, along with host James Duthie and Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie, will be on site in Saskatoon from December 26 to January 5 to break down all the action and provide in-depth analysis throughout the tournament. Here is what they have to say about Team Canada so far…:

Bob McKenzie, Hockey Insider

“Team Canada has no glaring weaknesses. It is a well-balanced team. But they will have to make sure they stay disciplined because it’s a team that plays with an edge and they may be susceptible to taking penalties. Also, their power play will have a tough time matching last year’s success rate of 50%, but it would be unfair to say special teams will be a weakness.”

“In terms of breakout stars, Taylor Hall, potential No. 1 overall pick in this year’s NHL Entry Draft, looks as though he is ready to emerge on the world stage.”

“I don’t really do specific predictions for this tournament, but I would say Canada and Sweden – on paper – are considered co-favourites, but the Russians are also a threat for the gold medal. I think the U.S. is a sleeper pick – not experienced enough to rate as a pre-tournament favourite for gold but it’s a young and talented team that could upset or knock off one of the gold medal threats. It’s tough to bet against Canada on home ice, though.”

Pierre McGuire, Game Analyst

“Taylor Hall will be the one to watch for Team Canada. He’s ‘Mark Messier-like’. He’s got size, speed and skill, and he knows how to make the players around him better.”

“Willie Desjardins will have a big impact on the team because he has them playing a high-tempo game, which plays to their strength. He also has them focusing on special teams, which are a big part of this tournament.”

“It’s hard to say who will be Team Canada’s toughest opponent but at the beginning I’d say their toughest challenge will be the Americans on New Year’s Eve. And then, as it goes along, probably Sweden.”

Gord Miller, Play-by-Play Announcer

“Team Canada’s strengths are its defence, led by Ryan Ellis, Colten Teubert and Alex Pietrangelo; the presence of four members of the defending Memorial Cup champion Windsor Spitfires; and playing on home ice.”

“Jake Allen of the Montreal Juniors will emerge as the starting goaltender. He won a World Under-18 championship in 2008 with Pat Quinn as the head coach.”

“A weakness for Team Canada is the fact that eight eligible players for the tournament are playing in the NHL. Team Canada with Steven Stamkos and John Tavares down the middle would have been incredible.”

James Duthie, Host

“Team Canada is an aggressive, physical, strong-skating team. It has plenty of potential game-breakers in Jordan Eberle, Taylor Hall and Nazem Kadri. They also have the home crowd behind them in Saskatoon. When Canada plays at home, I believe it’s worth almost a goal a game.”

“Team Canada is not as good as it could have been with all the eligible players still in the NHL. Pressure could also be a factor for Team Canada. When Canada expects nothing less than gold for a sixth straight year this has to weigh heavily on a bunch of teenagers.”

“Team Canada’s toughest opponent in the tournament is Sweden. They have seven first-rounders and eight returnees. Although Canadians may be getting sick of seeing the Swedes in the gold medal game, there’s a good chance they will see them again.”
