TSN Unveils Top 10 Sports Stories of 2009

Toronto, ON (December 14, 2009) – TSN today revealed its annual list of the Top 10 Sports Stories of 2009.  Featuring all the big performances, big upsets and big personalities from the past year, the list was chosen by a panel of TSN commentators, reporters and producers.  TSN will count down to #1 and officially announce its pick for Top Sports Story of 2009 during the annual year-end special, SPORTSCENTRE: YEAR IN REVIEW on Christmas Eve, Thursday, Dec. 24, at 7 p.m. ET.  Fans can also have their say and vote for their choice for Top Sports Story of 2009 on TSN.ca

From A-Rod to Tiger and from Sid the Kid to Brett Favre, the past 12 months have delivered some of the most compelling and surprising storylines in sports history.  The following 10 sports stories (in random order) are in the running for Top Sports Story of 2009:

  • Alex Rodriguez survives a steroid scandal and goes on to win his first World Series ring
  • Jim Balsillie and the NHL fight for ownership of the Phoenix Coyotes
  • Canada wins its fifth straight gold medal at the IIHF WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP
  • Violence in hockey leaves players, coaches and pundits reeling at the high incidence of serious injuries in all leagues
  • Roger Federer wins his 15th career Grand Slam title and stakes his claim as the greatest tennis player of all time
  • The Pittsburgh Steelers defeat the Arizona Cardinals to win SUPER BOWL XLIII
  • Brett Favre comes out of retirement (again) to play pivot for the surging Minnesota Vikings
  • Tiger Woods takes an “indefinite break from professional golf” after he admits to infidelity
