ESPN International is a division of ESPN, Inc., which has grown to include ownership — in whole or in part — of 47 television networks outside of the United States, as well as a variety of additional businesses that allow ESPN to reach sports fans in over 200 countries and territories across all seven continents. ESPN International business entities include television, radio, print, internet, broadband, wireless, consumer products, and event management. The company and its holdings maintain offices or production facilities in key locations around the world including Bangalore, Beijing, Buenos Aires, Delhi, Hong Kong, London, Mexico City, Miami, Montpellier, Mumbai, New York City, Paris, São Paulo, Seoul, Shanghai, Singapore, Sydney, Taiwan, and Toronto. Since 1983, ESPN (originally founded in Bristol, Connecticut, in 1979) has been growing around the world, establishing itself as the leading global sports media brand. The company’s philosophy to global growth is to always serve sports fans and be locally relevant to them, with content and products that tap into their great passion and dedication.
ESPN is 80 percent owned by ABC, Inc., which is an indirect subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company. The Hearst Corporation holds a 20 percent interest in ESPN. George Bodenheimer was named ESPN’s fifth President on November 19, 1998. On March 3, 2003, he was also appointed President of ABC Sports, overseeing all the multimedia sports assets of The Walt Disney Company. The role of co-chairman, Disney Media Networks was added on April 20, 2004. Bodenheimer serves on the boards of NCTA (The National Cable Telecommunications Association), Cable in the Classroom, and The V Foundation for Cancer Research, among others.

As Executive Vice President and Managing Director, Russell Wolff is responsible for all of ESPN’s businesses outside of the United States. Broadband Video: ESPN offers live and on-demand video content through a range of compelling broadband platforms. Branded ESPN Player, ESPN Play, and ESPN3 across its worldwide territories, the platforms offer live and on demand sports video to subscribers of select Internet Service Provider partners in Latin America (ESPN Play), Brazil (ESPN360), and Asia Pacific (ESPN Player and ESPN3). In Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, ESPN Player is offered directly to consumers on a direct subscription basis.
Consumer Products: ESPN and X Games branded consumer products, including apparel, Moto X bikes, skateboards, backpacks, books, and DVDs now available in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Japan, Australia, UK and Italy.
Publishing: In 2006, ESPN distributed its first Spanish-language book in Latin America titled Hablemos de Fútbol. In 2008, ESPN debuted its first Spanish-language edition of ESPN The Magazine in Mexico. In 2009, ESPN Magazine was debuted in Brazil.
Event Management: X Games, the world’s premier action sports competition, is staged throughout the world. In addition to the two U.S.-based events, ESPN has held X Games competitions and demonstration events around the world including Brazil, China, Japan, Dubai, Singapore, Taiwan, Philippines, UAB, France, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, Spain and Thailand. Winter X Games Europe in Tignes, France (the first Winter X Games event outside of the US). In May 2011 it was announced an expansion of six more games, two in the US and four outside, with bidding underway and host cities to be announced in 2012.

ASIA
ESPN STAR Sports— In November 1996, ESPN, Inc. entered into a 50:50 joint venture with STAR TV in Asia called ESPN STAR Sports. ESPN’s joint venture with STAR reaches 310 million viewers in Asia, through 19 networks covering 24 countries, each localized to deliver differentiated world-class premier sports programming to Asian viewers. Key programming includes English Premier League, UEFA Champions League, Formula 1, Wimbledon, NBA, and Major League Baseball. ESS produces five local editions of SportsCenter, customized for viewers in India, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Southeast Asia. ESS maintains three leading sports sites: espnstar.com (Asia), espnstar.com.tw (Taiwan), and espnstar.com.cn (China), which are offered in English, Taiwanese, and Mandarin, respectively. ESPN’s broadband platform is also available as ESPN Play and ESPN3. In 1998, the first Asian X Games Asia was held, taking place in Phuket Thailand. Since then, X Games Asia events have been hosted in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Seoul, South Korea and Shanghai, China. ESPN STAR Sports has offices in China, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Taipei and Singapore and employs more than 800 employees across the region.
ESPN is also a partner, with Japan Satellite Broadcasting, in JSB ESPN in Japan, which began as Japan Sports Channel in March of 1990 when ESPN joined with several Japanese companies to launch Japan Sports Channel.
AUSTRALIA / NEW ZEALAND
In Australia and New Zealand, ESPN offers a multi-channel, multi-media lineup including ESPN, ESPN HD, ESPN2, ESPN2 HD and ESPN3.com. The channels deliver fans a diverse portfolio of major global sporting events and properties, as well as locally-relevant content on the FOXTEL, AUSTAR, and SKY New Zealand platforms. The sports schedule across ESPN channels includes UEFA Champions League and Europa League football, Spanish La Liga football, Six Nations Rugby Union, ATP tennis, NFL (including the Super Bowl), NBA basketball, Major League Baseball, AMA Supercross, MLS, World Series of Poker, as well as NCAA American college football and basketball, Breeders’ Cup horse racing, and the summer and Winter X Games. Additionally, ESPN delivers high quality studio shows, such as a daily original edition of SportsCenter AUS/NZ, Pardon the Interruption - Australia, SportsCenter: Aussie’s Abroad and more. ESPN launched an HD service in Australia in May 2008. ESPN HD telecasts in Australia are carried on the FOXTEL HD+ service and on AUSTAR. In Australia, ESPN has also trialed several ESPN 3D telecasts, including the X Games and NCAA college basketball and NBA.
CANADA
Through its equity interest in CTV Specialty Television, Inc., ESPN has seven sports networks televised in Canada: TSN, TSN2, RDS, RDS2, ESPN Classic, NHL Network, and RIS Info Sports. TSN is Canada’s Sports Leader and Canada’s most-watched specialty network. Delivering more sports coverage in High Definition than any other network in Canada, TSN’s comprehensive broadcast schedule features an exciting lineup of sports including NHL, CFL, NFL, NBA, MLS, the IIHF World Junior Championship, Season of Champions Curling, Golf’s Majors, F1, NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series, Grand Slam Tennis, EURO 2012 and 2016, the Tour de France, NCAA March Madness tournament and Championship Boxing events. In 2008, TSN2 was launched and now ranks as the most-watched digital sports channel in Canada bringing fans a jam-packed line-up of exclusive live major league sports action. RDS is the only sports network in the world that broadcasts entirely in French, 24-hours a day. ESPN Classic was launched September 7, 2001. NHL Network, launched October 4, 2001 is the definitive hockey destination. NHL Network offers viewers a 24-hour all-access pass to complete hockey coverage both on and off the ice, including live NHL games, the NHL All-Star Game, NHL Stanley Cup Final and NHL Entry Draft. TSN properties include TSN2, TSN MOBILE and the industry-leading sports website TSN.ca. TSN is also the official broadcaster of the London 2012 Olympic Games.
EUROPE
ESPN in Europe operates a multi-faceted, multi-platform business which includes television, online and mobile brands. Based in London, ESPN EMEA continues to grow and currently employs approximately 200 people.
On television, ESPN operates three networks in the Europe — ESPN (UK), ESPN America and ESPN Classic and two HD simulcasts (ESPN HD (UK), ESPN America HD).
ESPN launched its signature channel in the UK and the Republic of Ireland on August 3, 2009. The channel features exclusive live coverage of the Barclays Premier League, Clydesdale Bank Premier League, the FA Cup, Aviva Premiership Rugby, Europa League, Italian Serie A, German Bundesliga, French Top 14 Rugby, NFL, NBA, WRC, UFC and much more.
In February 2009, ESPN launched ESPN America. The channel had previously been branded NASN, which had been acquired by ESPN in February 2007. ESPN America is the only European network dedicated to U.S. sport, and it now reaches nearly 19 million homes in more than 45 countries throughout Europe and the Middle East.
Launched in 2002, ESPN Classic is currently available in 23 million households in more than 40 countries across Europe, with dedicated feeds for UK, France, and Italy, as well as a pan-European feed. The network can be seen in English, French, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Turkish and Dutch.
Online, ESPN operates an industry-leading portfolio of sites from within its London and Bangalore offices, including ESPN.com.uk, ESPNcricinfo.com, ESPNscrum.com, ESPNsoccernet.com, and ESPNF1.com, as well as the pan-European broadband service ESPN Player. In 2007, ESPN acquired Cricinfo.com – the world’s leading cricket destination online – and Scrum.com, a leading rugby news and information site, and subsequently re-branded the sites. In August 2008, ESPN acquired Racing-Live.com, the leading independent motor racing website, and launched a re-branded and re-designed site — ESPNF1.com — in January 2010.
In August 2010, ESPN in the UK launched ESPN Goals, a comprehensive mobile football service delivering live video, scores and news. ESPN Goals is available in the UK as a free app, and is the first place – on any medium – for football fans to see video of all the goals and highlights for all Barclays Premier League matches each week over the next three seasons – within minutes of the action on the pitch.
LATIN AMERICA / CARIBBEAN
Launched in 1989, ESPN’s pan-regional Latin America network transmits to 19 countries and territories, now divided by North, South and Brazil feeds to better serve the fans in each region, broadcasting in Spanish, Portuguese and English. ESPN is currently available in over 33 million homes in the region. ESPN also offers regional networks: ESPN 2 (Mexico and the northern cone); ESPN 2 Venezuela, ESPN+ Sur (Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay); ESPN+ Andina (Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador and Colombia); ESPN, ESPN Brazil and ESPN HD in Brazil. In November, 2009, the network launched ESPN HD across Latin America, becoming the only 24/7 sports network broadcasting in high definition in some of these markets including Argentina, Brazil and Mexico. In November 2011, ESPN will launch ESPN3, its 11th network and 2nd Spanish-language HD service in Latin America.
The region also offers two English-language networks, ESPN Caribbean and ESPN2 Caribbean. Both were launched in 2007, offering the best in world sport while also providing a Caribbean focus on what viewers in the region most want to see. ESPN’s Caribbean networks air in 30 countries and territories. Key programming includes CONCACAF Champions League, Caribbean T20, Caribbean Super 50 and Nokia Champions League T20, English Premier League, Spanish La Liga, Golf Majors, NFL, Italian Serie A soccer, the NBA, MLB and Grand Slam tennis, as well as popular regionalized studio shows like SportsCenter and ESPNSoccernet Press Pass.
In 2011, ESPN’s broadband platforms also continue to expand in this region. The platform named ESPN Play – and ESPN360 in Brazil – is offered to subscribers of select partners across Latin America including Argentina (DIRECTV and Cablevision), Brazil (Telefonica), Chile (DIRECTV and VTR), Colombia (DIRECTV and Telmex), Costa Rica (Amnet), El Salvador (Tigo), Ecuador (DIRECTV and TV Cable), Panama (Cable & Wireless), Peru (Movistar and DIRECTV), Uruguay (DIRECTV and Nuevo Siglo), Venezuela (DIRECTV and Inter), Dominican Republic (WIND) and soon Mexico and the rest of the region. The platform features exclusive on-demand sports video, live events and high quality long-format video. Subscribers have access to exclusive events such as live UEFA Champions League matches, Italian Serie A soccer, the four tennis Grand Slams and the Indianapolis 500, Rugby World Cup, NBA, MLB and College Football and Basketball among other major sporting events. ESPN Play & ESPN 360 also feature local content including a growing library of Spanish-language video, ESPN events such as the X Games and original studio news shows
Online, ESPN also operates three top leading websites. ESPNdeportes.com, one of the leading Spanish-language sites in Latin America, averages over 100 million page views every month. The site covers more than 20 different sports with up-to-the-minute sports news, statistics, analysis and real-time scores; extensive video and audio programming; multiple free fantasy games; live event webcasts; live chat with players, ESPN experts and other sports personalities; a wide array of enterprise journalism; and user-generated content. For rugby fans, ESPNScrum.com provides the most thorough overview of the sport, including local information geared to the Argentine market. Re-launched in 2008, ESPN.com.br, is offered in Portuguese for users in Brazil. As one of the top-ten sports sites in the market, ESPN.com.br delivers news and information with the same journalistic spirit that always characterized the ESPN network in Brazil. In addition, ESPNsoccernet.com, the leading site that provides coverage of the world of soccer, is also available in the region.
ESPN International launched ESPN The Magazine Mexico in 2008, followed by the launch of ESPN Magazine Brazil in 2009. The monthly magazines present exclusive content from each respective country, focusing in sports news, prominent sports personalities, industry background, culture, among other topics. Both magazines are available nationwide.
ESPN International Radio began syndicating content in 2000 and is available in five markets. Since 2002, ESPN Radio Rivadavia airs in Argentina (AM 630), with national coverage through 64 repeating stations in every province in the country. Programming includes the award-winning daily afternoon news program La Oral Deportiva, with a second early afternoon extension; plus live coverage of the local soccer tournaments and international games of the Argentine national team. In 2010 ESPN launched ESPN 107.9 FM in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the first FM station with a sports and music mix in its programming including SportsCenter news flashes every half hour, exclusive live interviews with sports personalities and in-depth coverage of several tournaments with field reporters in every site.
In Mexico programming line-up includes ESPN Radio Formula, a national syndicated daily radio show simulcast on TV that focuses on daily sports news and analysis. ESPN Radio is also available in Brazil through a partnership with Grupo Estado. Rádio Estadão ESPN covers the most important soccer championships of Brazil and the world. In 2011, ESPN Radio launched its first two stations in the Caribbean, ZSR-FM (103.5) in the Bahamas and 104.5 FM y 690 AM in the Dominican Republic.
ESPN Mobile is also available in the region offering SMS alerts for up-to-the-minute sports news. The platform currently offers two mobile TV channels, one featuring a variety of ESPN content and a second presenting content exclusively dedicated to X Games. In Argentina, the ESPN107.9 app is available for iPhone and Blackberry users, streaming audio 24/7 as well as some live sporting events. Recently, Brazil launched its first APP for iPad and iPhone, called “ESPN Brazil APP”.

MIDDLE EAST / AFRICA / ISRAEL
ESPN reaches 70 countries in the Middle East and Africa via the leading operators in the region, including Al Jazeera – which serves the Middle East – and Multichoice – which serves sub-Saharan Africa.
ESPN has been in Africa for more than 15 years, delivering a wide variety of sports on television and online. When ESPN launched in June 1994 the television channel reached 19 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Since then, that number has increased to 48 countries and 3.8 million homes via the leading television platform operator – Multichoice. Complementing SuperSport’s channels ESPN digital platforms (led by ESPNsoccernet.com and ESPNcricinfo.com) reach hundreds of thousands of sports fans each month. ESPN broadcasts NFL, MLB, NBA, NASCAR, Spanish Primera League, Euroleague, NCAA Basketball and Football and SportsCenter.
ESPN also offers a separately programmed network for viewers in Israel, where ESPN is available on the YES and HOT platforms and delivers a lineup of international and American sport, including the NBA, NCAA Basketball, NFL, MLB, SportsCenter and more.
