CALLING ALL AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE FANS
Don’t miss the AFL Grand Final on Saturday 26 September LIVE on ESPN.
Starting an hour before kick-off, ESPN’s coverage will begin at 5:30 am CAT to capture all the pre-Grand Final entertainment from the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia.
The 113th annual championship game of the AFL will kick off at 6:30 am as St Kilda take on Geelong for the first time in a Grand Final. Having won 22 out of 24 games this season, the Saints are poised for victory but they will face tough opposition in Geelong who have made it to the last two Grand Finals, taking the trophy in 2007 but conceding to Hawthorn last year.
An integral part of Australian culture, the AFL Grand Final is the biggest event in the Australian sporting calendar, attracting an attendance of over 100,000 spectators last year.
Australian football or ‘footy’ as it is affectionately known ‘down under’, is the nation’s most popular football code ahead of rugby league, soccer and rugby union. Over 700,000 players participate each year with an average weekly attendance of almost 40,000 spectators at professional AFL games, making it the third most watched football code in the world, behind NFL (American football) and the Bundesliga Soccer (Germany).
The code is relatively new to South Africa but since the introduction of footyWILD two years ago, over 17,000 participants have been engaged in regular skill programs and competitions across the townships of four provinces (KZN, Gauteng, North West and Western Cape).
While the AFL Grand Final is taking place in Australia this weekend, the AFL South Africa footyWILD National Championships will be taking place at another MCG, the Mohadin Cricket Ground in Potchefstroom.
